Common Warning Signs That Your Vehicle Brakes Need Attention

Don't compromise your safety on the road. Schedule a visit immediately if you notice any of these typical warning indicators:

  • Illuminated Dashboard Lights: The brake wear or ABS warning indicator pops up on your instrument cluster.
  • Spongy Pedal Travel: The brake pedal feels unusually soft or sinks far too close to the floorboards.
  • Extended Stopping Distances: The car takes noticeably longer to come to a complete standstill.
  • Squealing or Screeching: High-pitched sounds indicating the built-in wear strips are making contact with the rotor.
  • Harsh Metal Grinding: A severe scraping sound meaning your friction material is entirely gone, risking costly damage to the discs.
  • Visible Disc Damage: Deep grooves, scoring, or heavy rust lips visible through your alloy wheels.
  • Hydraulic Fluid Leaks: Wet patches or fluid residue visible on the inner walls of your wheels or tyres.
  • Lateral Pulling: The steering wheel tugs or the car veers to one side whenever you apply pressure to the brakes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brake Pads & Discs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • How long does it take to replace brake pads and discs?

A standard front or rear brake pad replacement usually takes between 45 to 60 minutes. If you require both new pads and new brake discs fitted, the process typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours per axle.

  • Do I always need to change my brake discs when getting new pads?

Not every time. Brake pads wear down much faster than discs. Typically, a set of quality brake discs will last through two sets of brake pads. However, if our mechanics detect deep scoring, structural cracking, thinness below the manufacturer's safety limit, or heavy rust lips during your Free Brake Check, we will recommend changing them together for your safety.

  • Why are my brakes squeaking or squealing?

Squeaking brakes are usually caused by one of three things:

    • Wear Indicators: Many modern pads feature a tiny metal tab designed to scrape against the disc to warn you that the friction material is running low.
    • Dust and Debris: Road grit or built-up brake dust can get trapped between the pad and rotor.
    • Glazed Pads: Excessive heat from heavy, prolonged braking can harden the surface of the pads, causing them to slip and squeal.

  • How often should my brake fluid be changed?

Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a complete brake fluid flush every 2 years, regardless of your mileage. Because brake fluid naturally absorbs moisture over time, older fluid can boil under heavy braking, resulting in a dangerously "spongy" pedal and reduced stopping power.

  • Can I drive my car if the brake warning light comes on?

We highly advise against it. If your dashboard brake warning light stays illuminated, it means your fluid levels are dangerously low, there is a hydraulic fault, or your brake pads have worn past their safe limit. For your own safety and the safety of other road users, you should have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic immediately.
